About Dr. Emily Sneff:
Joining us from the East Coast, Dr. Emily Sneff is an early American historian, leading expert on the Declaration of Independence, and author of the acclaimed book When the Declaration of Independence Was News. She earned her Ph.D. in History from William & Mary and serves as a consulting curator for exhibitions commemorating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, including projects with Philadelphia's Museum of the American Revolution and Historic Trappe.
In her presentation, Dr. Sneff will share the fascinating story of how news of American independence spread throughout the colonies and across the Atlantic in the summer of 1776. Drawing on years of original research, she brings to life the people, places, and events that carried the Declaration from Philadelphia to communities across the emerging nation, offering fresh insight into one of the most pivotal moments in American history.

About Peggy Trotter Dammond Preacely:
- Former Freedom Rider and active member of the historic Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC).
- Arrested in Maryland and Georgia for her courageous grassroots activism, empowering communities and registering Black voters in underserved rural areas.
- Witnessed history at the March on Washington, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his legendary “I Have a Dream” speech, which helped pave the way for the Voting Rights Act of 1964
- Continued her fight for equality in the North, advocating against the de facto segregation of Boston schools.
- Proud descendant of a historic and influential family legacy: Mary Hemings Bell, sister of Sally Hemings. William Monroe Trotter, early civil rights pioneer, whose home is a designated National Historic Landmark. Ellen and William Craft, her great-great-grandparents, abolitionists who famously escaped enslavement in 1850s Atlanta through a daring disguise of white slave-owner and his slave.
- Serves on the Monticello “Getting Word” Advisory Board, comprised of descendants of those enslaved at Monticello.
